Welcome to the Rock Creek Horse Show, a cherished five-night event held annually in Louisville. Nestled in one of the nation's most picturesque settings, this celebrated competition is a highlight of the American Saddlebred calendar and a treasure for the local community.

Each night, attendees witness spectacular performances by some of the top American Saddlebred horses and Hackney ponies, ranging from novice contenders to seasoned World Champions. These talented equines are presented by passionate amateur and professional riders and drivers from across the country, all competing for prizes, recognition, and the honor of a win at Rock Creek—a badge of excellence in the competitive Saddlebred world.

But this show is about more than just ribbons; it’s a celebration of sport, community, and tradition. Exhibitors come to Rock Creek for its warm hospitality and the dedicated care offered by the Rock Creek Riding Club, a group nationally admired for their enthusiastic support of both competitors and horses. It’s this welcoming spirit that makes the Rock Creek Horse Show a standout event year after year.

1929-1937

The first Rock Creek Horse Show is held for club members. The event bec a two-day public competition, welcoming outside stables.

The roots of the Rock Creek Horse Show stretch back to 1933, when the first show was held exclusively for Rock Creek Riding Club members. By 1937, it evolved into a two-day public event, inviting outside stables to compete. Today, it has flourished into a renowned five-day affair that draws competitors and spectators from across the nation.

The club itself was founded on April 21, 1929, by a group of passionate equestrian enthusiasts, with Mrs. Henning Chambers serving as its first president. Early members made significant contributions to the Louisville community, including the creation of bridle paths in Cherokee and Seneca Parks.

One memorable figure in its history is Bayse Howell, the club’s first stable manager, who led its operations from 1929 to 1947. His legacy is preserved in a historic photograph displayed in the clubhouse—an emblem of the club’s rich heritage.

2025

The Rock Creek Horse Show has grown into a premier five-night competition, nationally recognized for excellence and community spirit.

The show proudly celebrates the American Saddlebred horse, often referred to as the "Kentucky Saddler." This breathtakingly versatile breed originated in Kentucky through the selective crossing of Thoroughbreds, Morgans, and pacers, creating the magnificent equine athletes we know today. Saddlebreds are both a symbol of beauty and a testament to Kentucky's rich history.

Their legacy even graced Hollywood, with authentic Saddlebred horses featured in the timeless classic "Gone With The Wind", adding historical accuracy to the film.

The Rock Creek Horse Show also invites every spectator to immerse themselves in the experience. Guests can explore the charming Victorian clubhouse, wander the grounds, and witness the spirit of equestrian competition under the glow of lights strung over ancient trees. From the colorful concession stands to the elegant riding attire of competitors, every detail contributes to the magic of this event.

It’s not just a competition—it’s a true family experience. The club's Junior Members, established in 1935, continue to nurture the next generation of riders and club leaders.

If this is your first horse show, don’t be shy—pick your favorite horse, cheer for its success, and feel the energy of this vibrant tradition. Many who come for a single night leave as lifelong fans, ready to return year after year.

The Rock Creek Horse Show isn’t just an event—it’s a family, and every guest is welcome to be a part of it.
